MACDL MINUTES OF JULY 19, 2007 BOARD MEETING Meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by President Dan Guerrero. The following people were present at the meeting: Jeff Degree, Brock Hunter, Faisson Sessoms, John Hughes, Dan Guerrero, Paula Brummel, Bob Sicoli, Manny Atwal, Mike Samuelson, Tom Plunkett, Carolyn Agin Schmitt Secretary’s Report- No report. Doug Olson is not at the meeting. Treasurer’s Report- Bob Sicoli. There is $17,375.71 in the checking account, and $7,854.36 in the savings account, for a total of $25,230.07. Amicus Committee Report- Faisson Sessoms. Nothing to report on red light or the Andrade case. Legislative Committee Report- Brock Hunter. The committee is going to support legislation to give judges the mechanism to depart from the sentencing guidelines for veterans who are suffering from PTSD. Working on it with Guy Campbell from the Council on Crime and Justice. It would involve dispositional departure for serious felonies if the veteran is suffering from PTSD. Senators Higgens and Mullory are going to sponsor the legislation. The Sentencing Guidelines Commissions drug sentencing committee is dysfunctional. Talking about not reducing drug sentences. The report was tabled until the next meeting. Website Committee Report- Jeff Degree. Jim Ostgard is doing a blog on the website. May want to consider moving blog inside of website for members only.CLE Committee Report- Dan Guerrero. Everything is set for the Duluth seminar. 25 people signed up so far. The alcohol for the party afterwards should cost about $200. Will have beer and wine. Challenger- Dan Guerrero. The Challenger is at the printer. Still looking for sponsors and contributors. Rules Committee Report- Tom Plunkett. Waiting for the Supreme Court Collateral Sanction Committee to get going. Golf Tournament- Paula Brummel. The date is set for August 13, 2007. Directory- Paula Brummel. The directory will be in the October Challenger. Fundraising Committee- Sarah MacGillis. Will have a meeting in August. Carolyn is looking at the grant writing angle. Eight foundations identified as possible sources for grants. NACDL does some grant proposals. Brock will talk with Scott Ahlers, the legislative director for NACDL to see if can get materials from NACDL. Old Business.Shakopee Jail Appointments. Dan will further look at this issue to decide whether we need to contact the chief judge. Arrest of people without Ids in Minneapolis. Anya MacMurray from the pds office has talked with the mayor about this issue, but no resolution yet. Meeting was adjourned at 6:16 p.m. |
